Utah’s general-season deer dates are the same in every general unit, and premium limited-entry hunts follow a similar calendar. Here are the 2026 dates and what to expect from each season.
2026 general-season buck deer dates

These dates are from the Utah DWR’s 2026 guidebook. Youth general-season deer hunters generally hunt the same seasons; confirm youth dates in the guidebook.

What each season is like
Archery (August 15 – September 11)
Bucks are in velvet on high summer range for much of the season, often in bachelor groups and on predictable feeding patterns. That makes them easier to pattern by glassing at first and last light. Expect warm days, afternoon thunderstorms at elevation, and lots of hiking. Velvet usually comes off around the start of September.
Muzzleloader (September 23 – October 1)
Bucks have shed velvet and are starting to move. Weather is cooler, and the season falls before the main rifle hunt, so pressure is lower. Utah limits muzzleloader scopes to 1x on muzzleloader hunts.
Early any legal weapon (October 7–11)
Offered only on some units. It’s short, and it spreads rifle pressure across more of October.
Any legal weapon (October 17–25)
Utah’s main rifle hunt, with the most hunters. Bucks are moving from summer range toward winter range, and early snow can push deer down and make them easier to find. Hunt early and late, glass hard, and get away from roads on opening weekend.
Extended archery
Extended archery areas sit mostly near towns and farms. They give bowhunters more time into the fall and sometimes a chance at bucks as the rut approaches in November.
Premium units (Henry Mountains and Paunsaugunt)
These hunts follow the same archery and muzzleloader dates as the general season, but the rifle hunts differ: the Henry Mountains rifle hunt runs October 17–25, and the Paunsaugunt rifle hunt runs a full two weeks, October 17–31. The extra week on the Paunsaugunt gives late-October hunters more time as bucks move off the plateau toward winter range. Both units have very few permits, so hunters who draw usually scout for days before the opener.
Planning around the calendar
- Scout in summer. Even if you hunt in October, a July or early August trip shows you where bucks are living and how hunters access the unit.
- Arrive early for opening day. Camping spots near popular access points fill up before the rifle opener.
- Watch the weather. An early storm in mid-October can move deer quickly. Have a plan for both high and low country.
- Pack for heat and cold. August archery can be hot at mid-elevations, while late-October nights often drop well below freezing.
How to pick your season
- Want to see a lot of bucks and hunt with less pressure? Archery, especially in velvet early in the season.
- Want a longer shot with less crowding? Muzzleloader.
- Want the easiest hunting conditions with a rifle? The October any-legal-weapon hunt, especially if you can stay through the second weekend.
- Want to hunt all of them? The Dedicated Hunter program lets you hunt all three seasons on one unit.
