Every western state runs its hunts differently: different draws, point systems, tag rules and deadlines. These guides break each one down in plain English, with current fees and season dates, what a hunt really costs, and the outfitters who hunt there.

Each state guide covers how to apply for the draw, which tags you can still buy over the counter, season dates, a full cost breakdown, and whether to go guided or do it yourself.

Not sure where to start?

If you want a tag this year without waiting on points, look at states with over-the-counter or general tags: Colorado and Idaho elk, Utah general-season elk, and Montana and Wyoming general licenses. For a trophy hunt, start building points now in Arizona, Nevada and Utah. New Mexico has no points, so just apply every year. And if you want a true adventure, Alaska is in a class of its own. Nonresidents need a guide for brown bear, Dall sheep and mountain goat.

Fees, dates and rules change every year. Each guide lists the year its facts come from. Always confirm in the state wildlife agency’s current regulations before you apply.
