New Mexico sets dates hunt by hunt, but most units follow the same calendar. The dates below are from the state’s deer rule for the 2026–27 license year. Each hunt code in the rules booklet shows its exact dates and weapon.

What each season is like
Early archery (September)
Bucks are often still in summer patterns, sometimes in velvet early in the month, and feeding on predictable routes. It is warm and dry, so water and shade are key, and meat care matters. Spot-and-stalk is the main tactic for mule deer.
Muzzleloader
Muzzleloader dates vary more than any other season. Some come in late September, others in October or early November. Scopes and red dots are not allowed on muzzleloader hunts in New Mexico; only open, iron, or peep sights.
Rifle (late October to mid-November)
Most rifle hunts are five days. Earlier hunts catch bucks before the rut, when they can be hard to find. Later hunts in mid-November get closer to the mule deer rut, when bucks start moving and checking does. Long-range glassing is the core of New Mexico deer hunting in both cases.
Coues whitetail (November to January)
Coues deer rut later than mule deer, typically in December and January. That’s why many whitetail hunts in units 23, 24, 26, and 27 run in December and late January. Expect to sit behind a tripod-mounted binocular for hours, picking apart oak and grass hillsides for a flicking ear or tail.
January archery
The January bow hunts are a favorite for experienced bowhunters. Mule deer are in or near the rut, and bucks are moving in daylight. Cold mornings, warm afternoons, and fewer hunters.
How to pick your hunt
- Want the mule deer rut? A mid-November rifle hunt or a January archery hunt.
- Want a Coues whitetail? A December or late-January whitetail hunt in the southwest units.
- Want better draw odds? An early rifle hunt or a September bow hunt in a less famous unit, as your second or third choice.
- Want warm weather and long days? September archery.
