Montana runs deer seasons statewide on the same calendar as elk, which keeps planning simple. The big advantage for deer hunters is that the general season runs through the end of November, right through the rut. Here are the 2026 dates.

What each season is like
Archery (September 5 – October 18)
Early September is a great time to bowhunt mule deer in the prairie and breaks, when bucks are still in summer patterns and often in small groups. Whitetails are on a predictable feeding pattern between bedding cover and crop fields, so stands on field edges work well. Heat and rattlesnakes are part of early-season hunting in the east.
General season opener (late October)
The first week brings the most hunters. Bucks haven’t been pressured yet, and mule deer are still in their fall ranges. In open country, glassing at first and last light is the main tactic.
Early to mid-November
Mule deer and whitetail bucks start to move more as the rut builds. Bucks that were hard to find in October begin to show up checking does. This is a good time to sit and glass for long hours, or to rattle and grunt in whitetail cover.
Late November
This is the peak of the rut for both species in most of Montana, and many hunters plan their trips around the last two weeks of the season. Weather can be very cold and snowy, especially on the open prairie. Snow makes tracking and spotting deer easier.
Muzzleloader (December 12–20)
A short late season where allowed. Deer are often bunched up on winter range and food sources.
Plan for weather and access
Montana’s prairie can swing from 70 degrees in early October to well below zero by late November. Wind is constant on the open plains, which affects both glassing and shooting. Late-season storms can make two-track roads to public land impassable, so carry chains, a shovel, and extra supplies. If you’re relying on Block Management, check each area’s rules before the season, since some close to motor vehicles or limit hunters per day.
How to pick your season
- Want to spot and stalk a mule deer with a bow? Early September in the prairie or breaks.
- Want a whitetail in the rut? Mid to late November.
- Want a mule deer buck in the rut? The last two weeks of November.
- Hunting with a youth? The October 15–16 youth hunt has less pressure.
- Want to combine with elk? An October archery trip, or late November with a Big Game Combination.
