Bull and Cow elk flat land Hunt outside of Alamosa Colorado
If you are looking for a high success low impact hunt we have it here and allow you to even take a cow and a bull during the same trip. The hunt takes place in GMU 791 on farm ground with spot and stalk being the main offensive tactic. The elk come out of the timber and national wildlife refuge scatter across Valley floor and on the river bottom the open irrigated farm land to feed on the farmer’s wares.
With 4000 acres of special private land only these hunts are one of a kind. The bulls and cows can be together or separate, large herds or small herds, anything goes because the season is from 08-15 through 12/31. These elk can be grazing on anything from Alfalfa to any agricultural greens available in the 7,500 foot of elevation valley you will be hunting. There is nothing better than alfalfa fed elk.
This hunt has a 75% success rate it is all about locating, stalking and shooting. The outfitter is good at the first two items and the third one is up to the hunters. Expect shots at 200 to 250 yards out. Shooting practice is a must for most hunters because the flat open property doesn’t provide much for cover in many cases.
Those sighting in at a 100 yard range should set their rifle to shoot about 2 inches high at 100 yards. Caliber and bullet weight is of extreme importance in this hunt. Elk are very tough animals so you want to hit them right behind the shoulder with the minimum caliber being a 270 with a 140 grain bullet. Recommended is the 7mm Mag or even the 300 Winchester, but many are taken with the old faithful 30.06 with the 180 grain bullet.
Additional gear recommended is a tall length Harris Bi-pod and practice shooting lying down with it. With no trees and needing some place to rest your rifle before shooting at anything over 75 yards the bi-pod come in handy and can make the difference between a hit and a miss or worse yet a wounded animal. These hunts are on vouchers so they can be done anytime throughout this season window. There are a total of 3 bull license vouchers and 4 cow license vouchers.
The bull hunt is only $3500 reduced outside of the month of September to only $2995 and the cow is $1300 reduced down to only $ 995 for this year only. The guide will field dress your elk and then bring you back the 20 miles to you lodging in Alamosa. It can be processed at any number of game processors in the area, fresh frozen and driven home under dry ice without spoiling a single T Bone steak.
Some of his hunt requires vouchers in most cases to get Colorado licenses and he is able to provide them on a limited basis for the hunt. Vouchers are for GMU751, GMU079, GMU791, GMU080 and GMU081. All hunts are on private land and private ranches. He focuses on small hunting parties of 2-4 so that he can be certain the time is pleasurable and the tags get filled. All hunts are 2x1 with only a $ 500 bump for a 1 on 1 hunt. Most hunting is from trucks or ATV’s depending on what private property you are hunting and what you are after.
With all hunts it is good to have you rifle, muzzleloader or bow shooting where you think it is so sighting in is available as long as you advise his in advance so he can make time in your schedule.
One eye catcher in this hunt is the low altitude hunting which is not standard in Colorado where it is not unusual to be pushing elk during the early seasons in the 9000 foot range. These are only at 7,500 feet and the hunting is of a low impact in nature which I will define below.
The first opportunity is a bull elk hunt with 6 spots available for the first 6 hunters that need them. The hunt takes place during the 3rd season in GMU751 with hunt dates of November 5th through November 10th. Hunters arrive on the 4th to prepare for the hunt. This area has a high concentration of color phased black bear and a bear can be taken during this 5 day hunt along with the elk for an additional fee.
This 3,750 acre ranch is well laid out for hunting. So well hunters are taken to their stands in the mornings where they can watch prime elk habitat for elk and bear. Please bring your binoculars they will save your legs a lot of walking. This lodge and hunt is back in the timber so you can get away from other hunter and let the public land hunters put the deer and elk on to your already overloaded hunting ground. The game is attracted to the habitat which includes two natural salt licks, plus the river bottom, hay fields and pockets of dark forest. Normally 250-275 class 5x5 & 6x6 bulls are harvested. It is recommended that you bring binoculars to assist in spotting the game.
This hunt was designed for the mature adult that hunts for the joy of hunting, not to be an ironman and climb mountains.
This is great for a hunter that walking up and down hills all day is no longer their cup of tea. The elk are moving this time if the year so a vantage point or stand is the best way to spot the elk first then with your guide you will stalk them for a kill. The guide will get you elk out and your help is appreciated if you are able to do so. The ATV’s make getting this big animal back to camp a quick process.
The lodging and meals are right on the ranches so once you arrive park your car and you won’t need it until you go home with antlers sticking out the back. Please bring your sleeping bags and you will be furnished a cot to sleep on. Camping trailers are not allowed because the lodge in back in the timber many miles on a 4 wheel drive road which would just eat up a camping trailer even if you could get it in.
The density of the bear population in this increases this time of the year because man bear den in this area. As the days get shorter they try to gorge themselves on as many acorns and berries as possible before they hear for their local den for the winter. Bears will feed as they take their routine routes each day. As the food supply weakening the route shortens and the bear spend more time closer to their denning areas. You will be hunting in their denning area, your chances of an encounter is very good in the afternoon or evening. The chances improve even more with an elk gut pile lying where an elk one time stood.
This is a fully Guided with meals and lodging in a rustic lodge setting a trip that would bring memories of the day gone by in the western Colorado hunting scrapbook. This time you are not only looking at the memories but they will be your own personal memories of the time you spent in the Colorado hills shooting elk and enjoying life.
The guide will gut, skin and cape your animal. There are butchers located in Alamosa and many of the other area towns that will cut and freeze your meat for the drive home or shipped through UPS.
This 5 day 6 night hunt is limited to only 6 hunters with licenses for 3rd season in GMU 751 for only $2995. Vouchers free with hunt.
Add a bear hunt while you are there for only an additional $ 745
