Big Game

This outfitter hunts a limited draw area GMU066 which like many limited draw areas is well known for their quality bucks and bulls because the average age of these game animals is older than those in a average Game Management Unit animals. They are hunting in a designated wilderness area that because of the limited access allowing foot and horseback hunting only again these animals are able to grow older due to minimal pressure from hunting. The Wilderness that we hunt is located just 65 miles from the town of Gunnison, an area that provided record class animals as far back as the early 1900’s.

In addition the area has had a 4 point or better restriction so it is truly being managed for trophy animals. Hunt the Elk Rut and the guide will bugle in a rut crazy bull, right into your archery equipment or muzzleloader in his full fury. The guide will be sitting about 20 yards behind you so you can ambush the bull as he comes to the guides calls. This is a guaranteed adrenalin rush like no other when a 1000 pound animal is showing his rage for the outfitters call taking out trees and raking 300-400 inched of bone mass antler against anything he can destroy.

Our trailhead begins at an elevation of roughly 9,250 feet. It extends into a wilderness study area where only foot and horseback travel is allowed. The area extends all the way to the top of two of Colorado’s 14,000 foot peaks. The terrain consists of beautiful alpine meadows, dark timber and aspen groves. Steep grades both up and down are common. Your success on a big bull is directly related to your physical condition. Hunting on foot rather than horseback is much more productive.

The lower portion of the area is covered in aspen and pine trees with high alpine meadows and clearings scattered throughout. The upper portion of the area is entirely above timberline. There are excellent spot and stalk opportunities in both areas as well as bugling and calling opportunities well into the rifle seasons.

The Colorado Division of Wildlife estimates the states elk herd at close to 300,000 animals the highest population of any other state, Montana, Idaho and Wyoming are at just above 100,000 elk. This hunting area is located in one of the states limited draw units, Unit 66. The limited draw units are managed for higher quality animals, giving our clients excellent opportunities for above average bulls. In addition, this permit has been hunted very lightly over the past four years, further increasing the average age of the bulls.

Our guests stay in heated canvas outfitter tents equipped with cots and other amenities. Our guests will arrive the morning before the hunt and we will ride by horseback to our base camp. Camps are located several miles from the roads and are only accessible by foot or horseback. The horses are kept in camp and are used for traveling and packing purposes. Hunts are conducted mainly by foot, as it is more productive. Our horses are calm, gentle, and sure-footed for even the least-experienced horseman. We will travel in the breathtaking beauty of the Rocky Mountains for seven days searching for that one special trophy. The morning following, we will pack out and hope to see you back the following year.

We strive to make your experience with us the best it can possibly be. We are dedicated and know what it takes to make a hunt successful and enjoyable. We will provide a hunt that you will remember for a lifetime.

Your transportation into the depths of the wilderness will be about an hour to two hours into the wilderness area. This assures that we are in a area secluded and not hunted by others. The guides have pre-scouted the area when the went in and set up the tent and camp. The area was selected after scouting and the history of good hunts in the area.

The horses will stay in camp as we hunt on foot from camp each day. Then they will be used to pack the elk out at the end of the hunt.
