If you’re used to Utah’s over-the-counter elk permits, deer works differently. Every general-season buck deer permit in Utah is issued through the spring draw, by unit and weapon type. There’s no statewide OTC buck tag. The good news is that general-season deer permits are far easier to get than limited-entry permits, and there are several ways to improve your odds. Here’s how they work for 2026.

How general-season deer permits work

  • By unit and weapon. Each permit is for one unit and one weapon type: archery, muzzleloader, or any legal weapon (rifle). Some units also have early any-legal-weapon or restricted-weapon hunts.
  • Drawn with preference points. The applicants with the most preference points draw first. Every unsuccessful application earns a point, and you lose your points when you draw.
  • Youth get 20% of general-season buck deer permits.
  • Nonresidents can apply for one general-season species, so deer counts as your general-season choice.

Picking a unit

Utah’s general units range from northern mountain ranges near the Wasatch Front to southern plateaus and desert ranges. Some things to think about:

  • Buck-to-doe ratios. Utah manages each unit for a buck-to-doe ratio under its mule deer plan, which runs through 2030. Units managed for higher ratios usually have more mature bucks and need more points.
  • Weapon choice. In many units archery permits draw more easily than rifle permits (check past draw results), and the archery season is long: August 15 to September 11 in 2026.
  • Access. Look at how much public land the unit has and where it sits during your season. Bucks move from high summer range toward winter range by late October.
  • CWD rules. In 2026, Ogden general any-legal-weapon hunters must submit a CWD sample.

The Utah Hunt Planner (hunt.utah.gov) shows unit boundaries, permit numbers, and past draw results.

Remaining permits

General-season deer permits not issued in the draw go on sale as remaining permits. In 2026, remaining permits went on sale July 7. These are first come, first served and usually in less popular units or weapon types. Check the DWR’s remaining permits page in early July.

Dedicated Hunter program

The Dedicated Hunter program is the best way to get the most hunting out of one unit. You commit to three years on a unit and can hunt archery, muzzleloader, and rifle seasons there each year. In return, you complete a conservation ethics course and at least 32 volunteer hours over the three years. You can take a buck in two of the three years.

Youth$120$915

Applications run during the March–April draw period.

Extended archery

Utah’s extended archery areas, mostly near towns and farmland, give bowhunters more time after the regular archery season, from September 12 to October 15 or November 30 depending on the area. For 2026 there’s also a new extended-archery-only general deer hunt (DB0008), which you apply for in the big game draw. Extended archery requires an online archery ethics course, and you must carry proof of completion.

CWMU deer

Cooperative Wildlife Management Units have their own buck deer permits. Residents can draw them; nonresidents get them through a voucher from the operator, typically as part of a guided hunt. CWMU buck permits cost $94 for residents and $1,070 for nonresidents, and drawing one triggers the same five-year waiting period as a limited-entry buck.
