This trophy stillwater only one hour northwest of Reno is one of California’s top trophy rainbow lakes. The nutrient rich waters supply an abundance of insect life, with major hatches being damsel fly and blood midges. Often one can sight cast to feeding fish during these active periods. Wading and float tubing the west shore can produce fish up to 8 lbs., due to the numerous weed beds which supply an inexhaustible food source. We refer to these rainbows as the Davis Lake “Lightning Bolts” due to their quickness and long runs. They will test your fly fishing abilities! Frenchmans Lake The early spring and late fall bite on this water can be spectacular. With many shallow coves, it is a fly fishing haven! The fish range from 1 to 5 lbs. some of which are wild fish with beautiful markings. It is not unusual to see a duo of bald eagles soaring overhead while you are getting hooked up and enjoying the scenery. Frenchman's has many hatches, with the most popular patterns fished here being Flashabuggers, Snails, Callibaetis, and Midge patterns. Other locations include the following: Martis Creek Reservoir, Jackson Meadows, Milton, Bridgeport Reservoir, Kirman Lake, and Eagle Lake. We have also found some lakes in Northeastern California approximately 3 hours from Reno that offer some superb fly fishing for Eagle Lake strain Rainbows that average anywhere from 18 to 23 inches. These fish are fat and fiesty and will test your fly fishing abilities. Thankfully, only a few know about these areas, and it is not unusual to have the water all to yourself.
