I've been hunting elk since the late 80's. All of my hunts have been DIY hunts in both Wyoming and Colorado. With several successful hunts during that time.But let me tell you something these guy's definitely know how to hunt their ranch, and know how to put you on Elk! The accommodations are over the top! You could not go to a 5 star restaurant any where in the USA and get a better meal. The staff is great! I would love to just sit around and listen to the stories. My guide's name was Derek,very professional and seems to be able to read an elks mind. I'm booking a hunt with them again for the upcoming year. And if possible would request Derek to guide me again.

3rd time here. Harvested trophy quality target animals each trip. Game-rich environment. Professional, proven guides. 5 star lodge - excellent accommodations & meals. Friendly people. Small amount of hunters in camp. Very happy with my second harvested velvet Muley on last 2 trips. I will be back!

SmithRancho was an incredible experience in all areas.Let's start with the lodge. It's simply beautiful. A + all the way.The ranch itself is breathtaking. I saw hundreds if not a thousand elk during my hunt. What an experience! These guys know how to do it. I was impressed learning about the family and ranch history. Besides the beautiful lodge,awesome hunting grounds and sheer numbers of game I saved the best for last. The people!!! My friend Jake and I were treated beyond good. We were treated like family.I was so impressed with everyone involved in the operation. I made new friends for sure. Cant wait to return. As far as the other review I don't get having great food ,awesome place and bagging a bull in a couple hours bad!

Smith Rancho is great if you want to shoot an elk and not have to work very hard for it. We saw HUNDREDS of elk within the first two hours of the hunt. Most of them were over a half-mile away and the guide would not let us pursue them to avoid scattering the herd, which is understandable. It was quite an experience seeing that many elk.

I shot a small 5x5 opening morning.

What I liked: lots of elk, great food, great lodging

What I didn't like: Expensive for a 3-day hunt ($4700). We saw a few bulls, but the vast majority were small and immature. This is basically a road hunt. We drove around on roads in an SUV to spot an elk. Once spotted, we stalked a mere 200 yards before I shot it. The guide drove the SUV right up to the downed elk and we winched it into the back. This might as well have been a high-fence hunt because there was minimal effort involved. I would have prefered some hiking off of the main roads.

In addition, the guide smoked the whole time and was very foul-mouthed, including while we were in the car. I'm no prude, but his foul language came across as very unprofessional. When we were on the elk, he could have done a better job helping me select the bigger of the two animals.

Overall I was very dissappointed to spend $4700 to road hunt for 2 hours and shoot a sub-par elk.
