Big Game

You will be beginning your (DIY) “Do it yourself” Hunt hunting from a luxury cabin nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. CABIN RENTAL DURING ELK SEASONS: $995.00 per hunter, per season.

If there are less than 5 paying hunters in the cabin than we may add others to bring the total number of hunters in the cabin to 5 or more.

Located at 8,868 feet in altitude, the cabin is 1,440 square feet with an open floor plan on both floors. The cabin is somewhat rustic with but very comfortable. Wood stove heat, spring water, hot water heater, plumbing and so on.

This is the best satisfying group hunt you will ever see. The lodging fits everyone. The hunting for the ones that want to endure the elk hunt has 1.9 million acres of vehicle restricted acres of prime elk country. There are roads going through the National Forest but this area has been managed to hold Elk and have great elk hunting. The forest property does not allow motorized vehicles except you are allowed to drive in directly to a downed deer or elk and back out of the National forest. While you are doing this you are not allowed to have a rifle with you.

This has greatly increased the game population where in the past they were pushed back to the areas that were almost inaccessible.

For those that don’t want to walk or ride a bike there is thousands of acres of BLM land that you can ride a ATV on with a permit, or drive a vehicle on. The trick here is to use the vehicle to get back off the beaten path then walk back in from there to find those prime hunting spots in the area.

There is also a pond on the 40 acres that the cabin is on which can be a great attraction during the early seasons with warm weather and dry feed for the deer and elk.

Cabin Lodging in Detail: This lovely remote property is located at 8,868 feet in altitude. The cabin is 1,440 square feet with a very open floor plan on both floors. The cabin is located in the center of Area 68 and sits on 40.82 beautiful acres which borders 1.8 million acres of the Rio Grande National Forest! The first floor of the cabin is wide open with a kitchen, dining area, utility room and bathroom with shower. The kitchen and dining area has a microwave, oven/stove and small refrigerator. A wood stove provides heat in the cabin and solar power and propane are used for lights and appliances. A cistern system supplies water to the cabin from a year-round spring. A lovely spiral staircase takes you to the loft which has an open sleeping area with a walk-in closet and bathroom with a claw-foot bath tub. The loft also has absolutely awesome views of the Sangres De Cristo Mountains! There are several trout streams in the area for fishing or you may choose to hike and explore an abandoned gold mine (Crystal Hill) which sits less than 1 mile from the cabin. A spring fed pond sits less than ¼ mile down from the cabin and ranges from 3 to 12 feet deep. World class elk, deer and antelope are abundant in the area which is a major elk winter ground. All furnishings and all appliances are included.

This cabin is in a perfect location. A development of 40 acre tracks was set up and it is in a prime location for hunting. There is a spring that runs all year and also provides water to the cabin. The same spring feed a pond on a property that is a wildlife magnet.  During hunting season you may need 4x4 to get to it although it is in a sheltered area that seems to usually miss the bad storms and only get a fraction of the snow that is forecast.

World class elk, deer and antelope are abundant in the area which is a major elk winter ground. Located in the center of Area 68, the cabin sits on 40.82 beautiful acres of wintering habitat.

The back of the lot is against 1.8 Million acres of Rio Grande National Forest with road access from the cabin. During hunting seasons you are allowed to drive in with a 4x4 truck or an ATV to retrieve you shot game in the afternoon without a gun. In the morning and before noon vehicles are not allowed.

Access from the other side of the lot is thousands of BLM land with unlimited access.

Elk and deer seasons will be reserved for groups of no more than 7 hunters per season. The minimum group size is 5. These hunts are non-guided but a caretaker will be present at the cabin during the seasons to make sure things run smoothly during each stay.

Location

The cabin is located in south-central Colorado. We are 7 miles of dirt road north of a small town called La Greta or 27 miles north of Monte Vista. The city of Alamosa is 45 minutes away with an airport, medical facilities and shopping. The beautiful city of Salida is also about 45 miles away (north-east of the cabin).

The cabin is really a Hunter's Paradise but it also has 4 major ski resorts within an hour's drive, as well as fishing and rock climbing within 1/2 hour drive. There are Gold Metal trout fishing water up and down the Rio Grande River.

(There are plenty of things for the whole family to do ~ all year-round).

The cabin is currently listed for sale but as all real estate circles have seen the economy doesn’t paint a very bright picture for a sale or even an offer. If by a wild chance it should sell before your reservation date we will refund 100% of any money paid and assist you in finding other lodging arrangements. You would still be able to hunt the Rio Grande national Forest property and the BLM property.

Some of the details of the photographs are as follows.

The first floor of the cabin is wide open with a kitchen, dining area, utility room and bathroom which has a shower in it.

The kitchen and dining area has a small microwave, coffee maker, oven/stove and a small refrigerator which is the perfect size for a short stay.

A wood stove provides heat in the cabin and solar power and propane are used for lights and appliances.

A cistern system supplies water to the cabin from a year-round spring.

A spiral staircase takes you up to an open loft where our guests sleep and enjoy an awesome view of the Sangres De Cristo Mountains.

The loft has an open sleeping area with a walk-in closet and a bathroom with a claw-foot bathtub in it.

Since we have no laundry facilities in the cabin, we ask our guests to bring along their own towels and bedding (sheets, blankets and/or sleeping bags).

We have a few extra blankets available for those extra chilly nights.

You may break your own trails by cross country skiing from the cabin door or visit the 2 major ski resorts within an hour's drive of the cabin.

Wolf Creek Pass is southwest of the cabin off of Highway 160.

There are also several trout streams in the area if you'd like to do a little fishing. The Rio Grande River is only 1/2 hour away!

You may choose to take a hike and explore an abandoned gold mine (Crystal Hill) which sits less than 1 mile from the cabin.

The Great Sand Dunes National Park is located less than 45 minutes east of the cabin and Penitente Canyon (rock climbing) is right around the corner.

Our Pond sits less than 1/4 mile down from the cabin. It is fed by the spring which supplies water to the cabin. It ranges from 3 to 12 feet deep.

If you'd like to drive your ATV into the National Forest, the state of Colorado would like you to pay for it! Off-Highway Vehicle Registrations for non-residents is $25.25.

Dr. Brad Prescott and Mike Donatella from California stayed and hunted from the BOK during the 3rd season and they each took these 4x5 bulls. Steve Humbly from California took a 5x7 bull in the fourth season. This bull was shot just 1 mile north of the Cabin, behind Crystal Hill. Then after about 1/2 mile hike up the hill, Steve had a cross-canyon shot of somewhere between 700 - 800 yards.
