Colorado Elk Mule Deer Bear Hunts GMU 75 741

This Outfitter provides hunting opportunities west of Durango in unit 741 which includes Sawmill Canyon, Indian Creek, Bridge Timber Mountain, and Goat Canyon in La Plata County. The ranch consists of 15,000 acres of privately owned land offering excellent habitat for elk, mule deer, mountain lion, black bear and Merriam's turkey. Camp accommodations include meals and lodging, walk-in cooler, and fire pit. All hunts are guided or semi-guided. We have your successful Colorado hunting adventure now!

•Elk Hunts

We provide excellent elk hunting in both units 75 and 741. The areas we hunt south west of Durango are located directly between the 3rd and 4th largest Elk herds in the state, those being the San Juan herd and the Disappointment herd respectfully. We have very good numbers of resident elk that live on our property most of the year, and also get a large number of elk traveling through moving from the high country to lower elevations later in the seasons.

We use all methods possible when hunting elk, from sitting over water holes in early season, to run and gun style hunting during the rut, to long range glassing and spot and stalk methods later in the season. Good optics are generally a must have, as we spend lots of time glassing distant ridge lines and travel routes the elk are notorious for crossing.

The elk we hunt reside in big country, and good physical condition is always a plus when chasing elk. The more a hunter can put into his or her hunt, the more they will get out of it at the same time increasing their chances at a good mature bull. If you’re looking for that true Western Big Game hunt, there is nothing more exciting than getting out in the woods and chasing these truly majestic animals in what can be described as nothing other than "God’s Country".

•Colorado Mule Deer Hunts

The majority of our mule deer hunting takes place in Unit 741 on our private land encompassing approximately 15,000 acres. The primary means of hunting in this area includes glassing from high elevations, scanning country were the deer are known to travel. We do a lot of spot and stalk style hunting in the archery season as well as in the rifle seasons. The terrain ranges from sage brush flats around 6,000 feet elevation to larger hills and mountains covered in timbers and shin oaks up around 8,000 ft. elevation. The hunter can expect to see several good deer during the course of a hunt and can expect to shoot a deer scoring between 150'' to 180''. We are hunting free ranging animals however, so you never can tell when one of those big 200 inchers might show itself

Alfalfa Field Mulie Hunts: 

We offer a very limited number of hunts in unit 75 on a small piece of farm land with large grass fields and an 80 acre alfalfa patch that draws in lots of Mule Deer. This hunt is less demanding physically than the hunts we offer on the mountain and the hunter can expect to see between 10 and 20 bucks a day. Historically the bucks we have taken off of the alfalfa field have scored between 170'' and 190'' with the chance of 200'' being very possible. We manage this field very carefully, and only harvest 3 mature bucks annually. For the hunter looking for that Mulie buck of a life time, the alfalfa field is the place to be.

•Black Bear Hunts

Fall bear season, both rifle and archery, runs nearly the entire month of September while the bears are spending most all of their time feeding on acorns and berries, getting fat for the upcoming winter. While bear tags can be obtained during the later big game rifle seasons, you must already have a license for either Elk or Mule deer. 

The prime time to hunt bear in the areas we hunt is no doubt in September. With much of our property being covered in shin oak, the acorns are always more than plentiful and so are the bears. The hunter can expect multiply opportunity at large trophy black bear. For the hunter looking for a little verity, more than half of the bears on our properties are color phase bear, having either a beautiful dark chocolate, blonde, or rusty cinnamon colored coat. No matter what the color, for the past three years the bears we have taken have all measured over 6 feet and hunters have enjoyed a nearly 100% opportunity rate on good mature trophy black bear.

During September we do primarily all of our hunting either sitting over water holes or glassing large meadows with fallen timbers. It is hot this time of year and the bears frequent the waters holes to drink and cool off. We set our stands according to trail cam photos at the water holes most visited by the bears and on the travel routes to and from the meadow and feeding areas. If a hunter has the patients they can expect to see several different bear, generally many of which will be color phased, in a day’s sit over a water hole. Weather hunting from in one of our brushed in ground blinds or from the elevated perch of a ladder stand, our bear hunts provide up close excitement that will get even the most experienced hunters heart pounding

•Mountain Lion Hunts

•We are now offering full service mountain lion hunts on our Colorado properties. Considered the top of the food chain among predator hunts, come with us to case the big cats of south west Colorado. We hunt using 4x4 vehicles and snow mobiles to locate tracks and then turn out tracking hounds to follow the tracks. Once tracks are found, the hunts are fast paced and exciting and there is nothing like watching the dogs work or coming up on a treed mountain lion. When you’re ready for an experience you will certainly never forget, come out west with us on a once in a life Mountain lion experience.

•Merriam's Turkey Hunts

•We are now offering spring time Merriam turkey hunts for the 2010 season. It will be the first time turkey hunts have ever been offered on our 15,000 acre private ranches south west of Durango. With many new food plots in the making, that the birds are frequent regularly, the hunting promises to be exciting and fast paced. Setting up on areas where the birds are known to travel and feed mixed with a run and gun style of locating moving birds guarantees an exciting fun filled hunt. So if it’s that elusive Merriam turkey you need to complete your grand slam or if your just looking for a fun hunt with friends’ out west, We will be glad to put you on your next big bird.

Combo Hunts:

Merriam's Turkey / Prairie Dog Hunt: 3 day - $1,250

All hunts include:

•Transportation to and from La Plata County Airport

•Meals while at camp

•Lodging in classic Colorado hunting cabin

•Guides (2 hunters per guide, 1-on-1 hunts can be arranged at additional cost)

•Use of walk-in cooler

•All Hunts are 5 day hunts, arrive in camp the day before, leave the day after (7 days total in camp)

Although the deadline is over, there is still a chance to obtain licenses. There are deer and elk licenses left over. See the Leftover List. You may also buy over the counter licenses.

Nonresidents apply at the same time and on the same application forms as resident hunters. They may purchase an over-the-counter license just the same as resident hunters.
