(DIY) “Do it Yourself Hunt on Private land” hunt with box blinds for two hunters. Ready made for the whitetail hunter to use his skills on elk.

Hunt elk in Colorado like you would whitetail deer in the eastern US, blinds are already in place and have been for years taking elk every year.

Box blind ( Salad Bowl) because of the heavy greenery that surrounds it.

The area in front of the Salad Bowl box blind has aspen quakies with a shooting land cut out

Lush green grass is growing down the draw that feeds the area in front of the blind. There is 1 pond of 3 ponds about 500 yards from the blind. The property is 1 ½ miles long at its widest point and nestles in a critical path for elk traffic. The property is at 8,800 and climbs to 9,500, prime elk elevation, yet it is minimal exertion hunt because you will be sitting in the box blinds.

Box blind 2 in on a natural travel corridor that the elk use to cross the neighbors fence. There are local and migrating elk in the area. The neighbor has 10,000 acres and hunts it quite heavy dispersing elk in all directions. The blind is about 150 yards from the property fence and is in a great location to catch elk coming through the property as the move as local feeding traffic and as migrating elk passing through the area. This 320 acres is in a prime location, you could have the whole mountain and this would still be the most successful area to hunt.  Since this property is not grazed by cattle and the neighbor’s property is grazed the elk tend to move back into this property to feed at different times of the day and night from the adjacent property. Hunting pressure from the neighboring property also pushes them over the fence at time too.

Success rate as a DIY has been 95% in the last few years for elk.

Two hunter’s maximum on the property per season, Non-hunting guest no-charge. The elk will stay in the area if they are not bumped off the property to many times. These elk are hunted like eastern whitetail to be the most successful. Move into the blinds before daylight and leave after dark.

ATV are allowed on the property to get elk out but any excess ATV riding jeopardizes the elk passing through for a few days. There is a cement pad on the property to park a camper or trailer or just to pitch a tent. Located east of Montrose on Highway 50 then 8 miles south of the town/post Office of Cimarron, Colorado it is located in GMU 065.

All of these areas are private so elk are continually being pushed into this area from hunting pressure. The nearest public hunting BLM land is 30 miles away and they know it is a safety zone and stay in there all through the seasons. The earliest seasons have the most traffic but there is a local herd that many times will stay there all year.

As far as hunt code GMU064 and GMU065 are lumped together. As a rule the private land license is easier to draw. You will be hunting Private Land. In some cases for the private land license you and put in for a point for your first choice and for this private land cow as your second choice. In that way you will get an elk point for next year and a cow elk license for this private land for this year. Please confirm your choice and points situation with the game and fish 303-297-1192 to confirm it will work in your case for these hunt codes.

Muzzleloader: 7 Day Hunt $995 (September. 10 - 18) (This is a draw license with the application deadline the first week in April; get your reservation in before applying for the license. It requires 1-2 points to draw a muzzleloader Bull license; it takes no points to draw a muzzleloader cow license. Chances are good that if there are bulls there are cows, and if there aren’t bulls there are still cows. This is a great rut hunt with a muzzleloader the bulls are aggressive and calling is quite successful with the use of a cow call.

Although the cow hunts in the other season usually have leftovers this late season is a meat hunt with winter snow and weather providing the hunter with the advantage. Many hunters know about the high success rate during this season so this late season licenses for this area always draw out.

E-F-065-L1-R Cow

The Late season has a lot to do with the snow depth. The season is a month long and some snow allows you to check for tracks. Too much snow and no pressure they are in their winter energy conservation mode and don’t move any more than they have to. If the snow level is low enough and they realize that this has not been grazed they are there. Deep snow can provide enough obstacles that they don’t stay or eat here. Many times the wind will blow the snow off in areas and even though they can dig down through the snow to find the grass it requires more energy consumption so the places that the wind blows the snow off are a better bet.
