You will be hunting over 3.5 Million acres with 15,000 deeded private ranch land. You will be on a working cattle ranch in GMU080 and GMU081, located in south central Colorado which is some of the best elk country in the world.  It is also the home of one of the largest elk herds in Colorado 300,000 animals, which has the largest elk population of any of the states. Highest concentration of publicly hunt-able elk in the world, we have plenty of game to practice on.

Muzzleloader, and all 4 elk rifle seasons have an application period that must be entered by the end of March. Archer and muzzleloader seasons span the fantastic elk rut which can put the bellowing, snorting, dirt digging big bull in your lap, hoping your arrow is enough to stop it. We will assist you in calling elk with a bugle and also a cow call so you can meet the bull face to face.

If you missed the application date, all is not lost. Either sex elk licenses are available and unlimited for archery. Also the second and 3rd elk season unlimited bull licenses are available over the counter. In addition in early August bull and cow elk licenses are available that are left over on a first come first serve basis on the internet. If you need assistance on applying we are happy to help.

This is an extremely popular Do it yourself (DIY) Colorado Elk Hunt that is extremely popular and completely books up every year. If you know elk and just need a place with a good population this hunt is for you.

We give you our local knowledge of the areas that the elk bed, feed, water and travel so you can hone in on their daily routine. We even will go over your maps with you and pin point elk frequented areas, trails, and good ambush points.

You will have 6 Days, 5 nights lodging on all hunts so that you have every opportunity to take a bull or a cow. We will provide you with 3 delicious meals a day (all you can eat Breakfast & Dinner.)

This is an $ 1800 with lodging and meals and for the last 6 hunters we will reduce it to only $1495.00 per hunter. Non-Resident licenses for a bull are $ 550 and a cow is $350 plus a $10 habitat stamp is required. Resident licenses are $50 for bull or cow.

Our focus is not only elk hunt but for those interested we provide a elk hunting education; who want the satisfaction of learning to understand and think like one of the most difficult big game animals in North America. These people were not fulfilled with the outfitter doing all the thinking for them and did not need the deadly certainty of the high fence. People desiring these things, are well provided for and have many options unlike the "do it your-self" kind of guy. Thus we created the first interactive educational elk hunting resort. Supplying these elk hunters with the technical support they deserve.

We offer at no cost to teach the art of elk hunting. We not only focus on the information needed for hunting in our area, but also at teaching elk specifics that can be used nationwide. 

We cater to hunters that have a limited time schedule and can only hunt weekends.

With almost 50 years of experience of hunting Colorado elk we have a wealth of knowledge that will place at the disposal of every hunter, for free!  Unlike an outfitter we are not restricted to a small area to hunt we can send you where ever the elk are.

Our lodge provides the security and many of the amenities of an outfitter, taking some of the work out of your hunt. No more arguing about who has to do the cooking and dishes when you all come into camp after dark. No more taking spit baths out of a pot or the frigid mountain stream to keep your scent down. And that infernal rock you sleep on that always ends up right in the middle of your back won't be there to hound you at our ranch. We keep up with the elk and give you free tips he actually gives a free complete seminar on everything you will need to know to begin hunting. The seminars are so in depth that any level of hunter from beginner to professional elk guide can learn something to make their hunt better. Over the years these techniques have helped down innumerable elk, including several in the 400 class range. In addition that’s not just on private land, but also on public free chase land! You may not kill an elk every time you come but you will have a good time and a first rate vacation. We are so confident we will make this promise to you. If you hunt with us three years in a row and still don't kill an elk you can hunt with us for free the next year. That is how sure he is of his techniques!

We are a family business and know how important family is. Therefore we love to see a man bring his wife and or kids. Even if they are not hunters there is a lot to do on the ranch and in our Valley. 

Anyone who hunts at the High Plains Drift Inn is welcome to bring their family back to use the cabins during the summer free of charge.

The Inn is built like an old western town. Our cabins are of different sizes holding anywhere from six to sixteen; we also have separate rooms. 

Decorated with game heads from all over the U.S. and has a fire place you can thaw your chills out. 

The dining room is boasts an all you can eat buffet warming table. So no matter how late that elk kept you out, your food will still be hot. We don't like people to going away hungry. The only thing about the dining room that sometimes isn't appreciated is our chandeliers! We do not have electricity wired into the buildings so lighting is by lantern; kerosene or propane. The lack of electricity is not what the problem is though, because we can still charge anything you need with our inverters and generators. 

We don't want you to feel bad about walking in with your dirty hunting boots so we have tried to make the rooms appropriate and comfortable for a hunting lodge. We provide clean sheets, sanitized mattress covers, pillows, blankets, towels, wash cloths, hand towels and soap. Beds are bunk bed type, double on bottom and twin on top.

We know that waiting too long to clean up is aggravating so all cabins have access to a shower house that has four shower stalls and sinks with hot and cold running water. There are also multiple outhouses. Some of the accommodations have indoor plumbing as well. Let us know if you have health issues that make indoor plumbing a priority or a dietary requirement. 

We have a 450 yard rifle range as well as an archery target so you can check your rifle when you arrive and also stay in practice.

When you get your elk, we also have places to hang and age it. We will also be glad to help you process it for transport.
