Our goal at is to provide a quality Colorado Elk Hunting experience for every budget.
Whether you are looking for a Drop Camp, a One on One Guide Service, or something in between you have come to the right Outfitter. Our hunts take place on Federal Lands in Colorado's Game Management Unit 28 just south of the Rocky Mountain National Park and Lake Granby and north of Winter Park Ski Resort operating under Forest Service Permit #SUL469. This is part of the Arapaho National Forest. The area that our permit covers is much like a wilderness area in that motorized vehicles are not allowed, so we pack you and your gear in on horseback. For those that may not feel comfortable riding a horse we have a camp that is accessible by 4WD or we can put you in a cabin with electricity and bathroom with hot water and shower. We offer Elk, Mule Deer, Moose, & Bear hunts.
There is a very good reason why almost all, if not all, outfitters in the high country require you to fill out a health form and sign a waiver!
I guess I don't harp on it enough because I still have clients that say “I did not realize it was going to be so tough ". You see most of us do not live at a 10,000 foot elevation like the elk do, so, if you are coming out to hunt elk, say from sea level, you are going to need to get in shape, to say the least. Your lungs just can't acclimate to that altitude overnight. As a matter of fact, by the end of your hunt, they probably will not have acclimated even if you have done a lot of cardio exercise. DO NOT LET THAT BE AN EXCUSE NOT TO EXERCISE!!! I know from experience that the more cardio exercise you do the better off you will be when you get in the high country. On your hunt you will climb 500 to 1500 feet in elevation a day and that is starting at an elevation of about 8900 feet. That's 50 to 150 stories. Go to the gym; get on the stair climber, no not that one, the one that works like an escalator. Set it at the slowest setting it has and see how many feet or stories you can climb without stopping, and then consider the elevation you are at. I am not writing this to scare you from coming out to hunt with me that would be self-defeating. But I would rather you come hunting with me and be able to have a good time doing it and increase your odds of success. And of course, I do not want to hear you say, “I did not realize it was going to be so tough’.
If you are concerned about being able to get in good enough shape or your health, give me a call we can add a horse to your hunt package and leave most of the walking to them.
The hunt each day will start out with a hearty breakfast. You will be given an option on lunch either to take it along with you or go back to camp for it. You will leave camp in enough time to reach a spot that your guide thinks will give you the advantage for that day based on game movements from previous days. During the rut in September this is more than likely going to be on a ridge where bugling elk can be heard and located more easily in order to make a plan to get in front of them and set up to call them in. Sounds easy right, if that's what you are thinking it is time to go to the need to know page. The afternoon hunt will go much like the morning hunt. Supper will be ready when you get back from the days hunt.
If you have not hunted elk during the rut when they are bugling you have no idea what you are missing. If you are not a bow hunter you need to consider getting into it, unit 28 has over the counter tags for archery. If that doesn’t work for you try muzzle loading, it's during the bugling season also. If you come hunting this time of the year you will really want to be in the best shape possible. This past season I chased a bull from about 9,000 ft. to 10,000 ft. down to 9,000 ft. back up to 10,000 ft. back down to 9,000 ft. and back up to 10,000 ft. where he bedded down. And this was all done by 11:00 AM.
If you are coming on a rifle hunt we will mainly be going out and setting up on travel corridors were we know the elk are likely to come during that particular season. During the rifle seasons the elk are herding back up and migrating down out of the higher elevations above our camps which put us in the perfect spot. We have the advantage of hunting the local herd and the ones that are migrating to their winter grounds.
